I’ve done three derelict freighters (that you go inside, not just shoot cargo pods) and I have not seen any life at all. That same derelict will spawn in several of the systems (there are only 4 or 5 different derelicts that will spawn in any given region). So you can see if there's another pirate freighter in each system that spawns that derelict.

Unfortunately there is a difference between a Derelict Freighter as a random space encounter and a Derelict Freighter you find with a Emergency Broadcast Receiver. The random encounter version doesn't have any interior, so you can't land on it, but there are often 1-2 cargo pods you can destroy for some resources.My understanding is the same derelict freighter will spawn in the same star system. The loot you get will change but the basic layout (rooms, crates etc) will be the same each time. So as long as you know where to find it, you can go back to it.
