KOTOR 2 expanded upon it and gave it a darker, much more nuanced twist which is why it's very polarizing, but the people who do love it, love it to death. I don't know what you prefer but it seems to me that the reason you weren't able to enjoy K2 is that you were expecting something much more different than what you got.

I questioned if they really were the "good guys" they usually are. And for a video game to have that effect, it has to be a damn good dialogue.

Kotor 1 has you searching for a superweapon, because that trope is totally not overused in star wars. The plot twist was clever but not all stories require mind shattering twists.
