Once you’ve made it past the first boss (whichever one it is), then you can abandon the run without any penalty. not sure how you feel about mods, but there is one to do just that. Just start passing turns until you die and there won't be penalty. Also beating the first boss removes it. Out of the whole game I think this mechanic is so dumb.
