Posted April 4, 2019. Go through the gears and make sure they all work. Double check the fluids, look for welds on the frame for a wreck/repair. Make sure the underside of the plastics match color so you know none were replaced. There is a post here about buying a used bike. I posted the topic a little while back.

2002 Prairie 300 4x4 - the starter button stopped working. I have systematically looked at the issue from the button itself down to the solenoid on to the starter and the battery. For the life of me I have no idea what is the problem. The starter button shows it has voltage reaching it. The battery is good (it works fine on my Praire 400).

It's probably the spring loaded gear selector fork under the shifter assy behind the rear head. it's VERY easy for one side of that spring mechanism to fall off when assembling. this way you don't get a full throw when putting it in gear with the hand shifter.
