Glenfield 30a vs marlin 336.
I have a Glenfield model 30, 30A, and 30GT, to go along with a 336 in .35 cal., and a Model 39 Mountie. Its been said the Glennies shoot more accurately than the 336's because of the fore arm end cap. I can't speak to that really, but they have turned me into a Marlin fan. I like them pretty darn well.
These models have walnut-stained hardwood stocks (as opposed to American Walnut stocks) and were sold for significantly lower prices than standard Model 336's. Mechanically identical to the Model 336, these rifles were sold under the names Glenfield, Glenfield Marlin or Marlin as Models 30, 30A, 30AS and 30AW.Have had 5 or 6 Model 336 .30-30's over the last 40 years and probably a dozen or more Marlin lever actions altogether and the most accurate ones by a noticeable margin were the ones without barrel bands - a Model 336AS .30-30, 336 SC, a .444 and a little 1894 .45 Limited.Mr Brophy's book on Marlins says that they were made from 1964 to 1970 with the half mag. The early ones were marked as the 36G and the rest as Glenfield model 30. He says that 5,930 Model 36G were produced in 1964-65. I kept the original scope as a novelty piece. Mine was a pawn shop find in Georgia in 2012. But I'd expect the same accuracy and reliability as a standard Marlin 336. And those can vary. Some will keep 3 shots into 1", or very close to it, at 100 yards. Some will just barely keep 3 shots in 3". Hello, this is my JM stamped Glenfield 30A which is basically a Marlin 336 but with a cheaper stock and its in great condition. By my research it was made in 1973 based on the serial number. There is still plenty of rifling left so it hasn't been used that much. Like Richard said, the 30aw is basically a 336 with different furniture and some exterior hardware. Internally they are identical.
