But some were rated higher depending on it's application. 1989 was not a high horsepower maybe 230 or torque motor if I recall correctly. You could just have that trans freshened up to handle new motor.

a built 4L80e will stay behind a 1000rwhp/1000rwtq turbo'd 408 lsx in a 4500lb. truck, and that is well documented. a 4L65e will hold up to 500rwhp/500rwtq in the same truck. There are many factors that kill a trans, weight and torque are two of the main factors but engine RPM is another big one that is overlooked.

The 330 uses a lot of forged internals so it's pretty stout. Your biggest limitation with stock pistons and any kind of FI is going to be due to the compression ratio, which will limit the amount of boost you can add without major detonation issues. If you want something reasonably reliable for a modded car, at 600+hp, you might as well build the engine. depends on how you drive it and how lucky you are. some guys are able to handle the 175hp tunes and some can barely handle the 60hp tunes. Boosted launches and drag/street racing will spell a quick end to a dodge tranny with over 100hp tunes. mine is stock, and I can slip the TC at 1100 rpms trying to get the rpms up at a stop light.
