I've been trying to go as spoiler-free in my runs of ror2 as possible, but some of this stuff is just so obscure that it feels near impossible. Luckily, there's a pretty good page on the wiki for hints on where to find the artifact patterns for the portal, but Rex's unlock just sounds so obscure, and I have yet to find a guide that doesnt just spell it out explicitly.

My issue with rex is health management. I'm good at ror2, can consistently infinite monsoon runs with my mains, can get infinite runs 70% of the time or so with every other character, have about 200 hours on file not counting the hours I have when I cracked the game to see if I'd like it or not and I stayed up for a whole night binging it.

The only hard thought I gave rex was if he was worse than commando and even commando has a better rise mid game because he has better procs and his abilities don't hinder him, unlike some of rex's which cost health. Rex as a character is a great idea, but I wish the execution was better. They kinda need to buff him.
