Make sure you improve your magic power at ALL stages of the game. Use a cheap power such as silky or bloody. I recommend 200-250 at your stage. For the pet, use a lion pet for more dmg or a baby yeti for more ehp, whichever you want. Make sure they have shelmets.

The only good mage weapon that doesn't have floor completion or catacombs completion is the frozen scythe. If you got at least 7m-10m lying around, you can get this weapon and skip bonzo staff/dreadlord sword. Otherwise follow the budgets listed in this thread.
