The best advice anyone can give is to simply try out different builds. Respeccing is so cheap in this game that it's practically free, so don't be afraid to do it. I personally play a Controller/ Assassin build and with Mind Games, a good SMG or Shotgun, and a Phasewalk cooldown of next to nothing, Lilith rapes things. I'm practically invincible. Lilith/Skill tree. Phasewalk Gain the ability to turn invisible and move incredibly fast. Upon entering/leaving Phasewalk, you create a Phase Blast that damages nearby enemies. Mind games is a nice skill to have. Other than reaching that skill (Diva, Girl Power and that shark-icon skill), Slayer and everything below it is nice (except the final skill in that tree; it's bugged and sucks). Quicksilver is also handy. This is a general build that will help you with any weapon you use, be it pistols, rifles or SMGs.
