It's only been driven about 8 hours so far, now when I press the throttle it occasionally doesn't respond. Coughs, sputters, acts like it's out of gas even though the tank is half full.

Disconnect the shift cable at the transmission, this will allow you to work the shifter to see if it's something in the cable as well as work the arm on the transmission by hand to see if it is rough/hard to operate.
